Waterline opens as the tallest building in Texas

Waterline at 98 Red River is open. The 74-story tower stands 1,025 feet, and its 1 Hotel Austin opened September 3, 2026, after construction finished about two months ahead of schedule. The building also holds rental apartments, office floors, a coffee shop and the restaurant Alteño. KUT reported one-bedroom rents starting at $4,027 a month including mandatory fees, and two-bedrooms at $12,357.

Light-rail agency drops lakefront office move and stays on Colorado Street

The Austin Transit Partnership board voted September 21 to drop a $47 million lease at 100 Congress Ave and instead expand its existing downtown office at 203 Colorado St. into 201 Colorado St. The new arrangement costs roughly $500,000 less a year, and the agency expects to move into the expanded space in March 2027. ATP still aims to break ground on the light-rail project next year.

Austin adopts $6.63 billion budget and higher city tax rate

Austin City Council adopted a $6.63 billion budget for fiscal 2026-27 and a city property tax rate of $0.579948 per $100 of value, with Mayor Kirk Watson and Council Member Marc Duchen voting against.
